It concerns an original photographic process developed last century in Brazil, simultaneously and independently from other processes developed with the same aim mostly in Europe. A detailed reconstruction of this process created by the Frenchman Hercule Florence is performed by directly inves-tigating his manuscripts and other original documents of the period. Combining elements from the Mertonian theory of discovery and science studies, I argue that the local peri-pheral circumstances areembodied in the final form of Florence’s process: a photographic process without a camera obscura.porAcesso AbertoHistória da fotografiaHistória da ciênciaDescobertas múltiplasHistory of photographyHistory of scienceMultiple discoveryBrasil, 1833: a descoberta da fotografia revisitadaArtigo10.5216/vis.v2i1.17891
