In this process, and before the significant presence of Muslims and Jews in the Iberian Peninsula, it was necessary to reinforce the ecclesiastical discourse for maintenance of Catholic faith, under the auspices of the Iberian kings. They were admonished about being heroes of Christian faith, purpose that motivated friar Álvaro Pais, already provided Bishop of the diocese of Silves, Portugal, to write to king Alfonso XI of Castile his Speculum regum.
