The path traces an understanding of methodological updates, as well as the breakdown of paradigms that allowed the understanding of complex social contexts and the presence of the subjects located in social and historical processes. It presents the main concepts, theories and procedures of application, methods and techniques in light of the studies of researchers Teresa Duarte and Cecília Minayo and researchers Norman Denzin and Uwe Flick. It presents the use of triangulation in qualitative and quantitative research and also the triangulation as a methodological proposal in qualitative research considering object, subject and phenomenon, focusing on the metaphenom. It concludes that the triangulation extends the possibility of explanations for certain phenomena from the use of strategies such as the theoretical, methodological, data triangulation and of investigators evidencing a more complete analysis and interpretation of the studied phenomena.Este artículo presenta discusiones sobre el contexto del surgimiento de la triangulación, abordando los paradigmas que alcanzan el positivismo, el post-positivismo, la teoría crítica y el constructivismo social. Presenta los principales conceptos, teorías y procedimientos de aplicación, métodos y técnicas, así como el uso de la triangulación en la investigación cualitativa y cuantitativa y también la triangulación como una propuesta metodológica en la investigación cualitativa considerando objetos, sujetos y fenómenos, con un enfoque en el metafenómeno.
