The constitution of narcissistic ideals of morality in social life comprises an important dimension in the regulation of intersubjective relations. However, in a culture that represses aggressiveness and intensifies the sadism of the Superego, there is a conflicting deal with hatred that becomes aimed against the subject himself and that does not attenuate hostility to others. Based on Freudian metapsychology, it is clear that the satisfaction extracted from the masochistic fantasy of beating in the Oedipus complex appears in moral masochism as a drive mix, which obtains satisfaction in the masochistic self-depreciation of the Ego. The Lacanian concepts of fantasy and jouissance broaden this understanding by evidencing the presence of suffering masochistically enjoyed in the correctional punishment of guilt, as well as the way it relates to a passive subjective position in the face of the negative jouissance of the Other.
