Method: sample included 211 residents of households benefited by the Brazilian Family Health Program and which had the worse household conditions in the city of Bonfinópolis - GO. Data were collected by interview using a structured questionnaire. Chi-square tests were used for comparisons between the variables. Result: the most common brushing frequency was twice a day or less (56.2%). The most cited oral hygiene aids were toothbrush (93.8%) and toothpaste (90.5%). Most reported being satisfied with their dental hygiene and considered it is important to care of their teeth. 57.3% cited prevention of dental diseases as the main reason for taking care of teeth. Women, younger people and those with more years of schooling had higher frequency of use of dental floss (p < 0.05). Frequency of toothbrushing was higher among younger people, those with more years of schooling and dentate people (p < 0.05).
