Resumo
Samples of Trypanosoma cruzi
isolated from five pregnant women
living in the same endemic área were
studied. The behaviour in the experimental
animal, morphological aspects
of the blood — forms and histopathological
lesions in mice were
considered. Although in two of the
women, congenital transmission of the
infection to the foetus hás been
observed, we could not observe differences
between the strains of T.
cruzi isolated from those cases and
the strains isolated from the cases in
which no congenital transmission
ocurred. The five samples of T, bruzi
seem to belong to the same strain
pattern. The number of cases here
studied was not suffícient for any
conclusions about the ínfluence of
different strains of T. cruzi on congenital
transmission of the infection.
However we think that the present itudy could be uaeful as « comparatlvê
basls for the research on the strains
of T. cnizi isolated ífrcuv different
áreas where congenital tranuntiilon
of Chagas discase is Va^ pf even
absent.
