Resumo

Human caliciviruses (HuCVs) have been worldwide described as important pathogens in the acute gastroenteritis. These viruses belong to the Caliciviridae family that has four described genera Norovirus and Sapovirus being the only ones that infect humans. They have a single strand of RNA of positive polarity and polyadenylated in the 3’extremity. They present a nucleocapsid of icosahedral symmetry of 27-40 nm of diameter and a typical architecture with 32 cup-shaped depressions. The HuCVs have a great genetic diversity making difficult the studies of genomic characterization. The knowledge of the epidemiology of the caliciviruses infection and the availability of efficient and fast methods of detection of theses viruses are important for strategies of prevention and control.
