The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the contention method, surgical technique, and age on the postoperative complications and the weight gain of bovines submitted to two orchiectomy techniques. A total of 240 male, crossbred (ZEBU X EUROPEAN) cattle, 18 to 22 months and medium weight of 300 kg were used in this study, randomly distributed in 8 groups of 30 animals according to the period of the castration, age, contention method and surgical techniques employed. The bovines belonging to groups I, II, III e IV were submitted to orchiectomy through two lateral incisions at the scrotal extremity and the contention was performed on tiestalls. Lydocaine was employed as anesthetic for the spermatic cord. The animals from groups V, VI, VII e VIII were submitted to the scrotal extremity removal technique and the animals were immobilized in right lateral decubitus. The orchiectomies of the animals from groups I, II, III e IV were done in May and the orchiectomies of the other groups in December. The main complications observed were edema, myiasis, blood clot retention, hemorrhage and granulomatous tissue. The surgical technique of lateral incision at the scrotal extremity associated to the contention method (tiestall) was the one that presented less postoperative complications. The greatest occurrence of complications was found among the animals castrated on December and submitted to scrotal extremity removal (p<0,05). The season in which the animals were operated, the surgical technique and the contention method had effects on the weight gain and postoperative complications.
