Resumo
Following french sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice, this
brief essay looks at scientific and technological production from two perspectives:
as a scientific field and as a political field. As a political field, science is a competitive
situation, in which a number of agents vie to provide the best representation for
many or all citizens. But scientific research, as well as its products distributed
through the markctplace, must always be e000valuated according to ethical
principles. Ethics, here, is understood from a social perspective and not from the
perspective of realizing individual values. In this sense, science cannot neglect the
centrality of men and women as physical, spiritual, cultural and political totalities;
the environmental conditions in which these men and women live; and the urgency
of reaching an intercultural understanding of society.
