Resumo
Aurelius Prudentius Clemens in IV century AD produced the work Liber Periste-
phanon or The Book of Crowns, which sings and tells in verse the tortures suffered by many
martyrs in Rome and the provinces. The martyrs are identified with the gentiles heroes and
their tombs are converted into points of pilgrimage. In this article, we analyze the Pruden-
tius’ poetry, emphasizing the classical roots of the rhetoric employed by the christian poet.
