Resumo
This paper seeks to analyze the medieval Portuguese monastic medicine in the Middle
Ages before and after the Universty ́s foundation at 1290 by the king D. Dinis. The sources corpus
include beneditine and augustiani rules, liber ordinis or customaries, books catalogue from Santa
Cruz of Coimbra and conciliary legislation. There were two basic moments of monastic medicine:
the first had occurred in the 6 th century with the beneditine rule which had favoured the
development of two spaces for the sicks monks and poors care, e. g., infirmary and hospital. The
second moment, in the 13 th century focused the institucional medical scholasticism and at the same
time the Church conciliar legislation attempts to forbide for the monks the practica medica.
