Resumo
This paper discusses the role of painter Modesto Brocos y Gomez (1852-1936), a former
professor at Escola Nacional de Belas Artes (RJ), as regards the identity of Brazilian art in the late 19th
century and early 20th century. It brings to the fore early debates concerning national art which were held
at Academia Imperial de Belas Artes, the Galicia-born painter's views on the subject as expressed by his
written and pictorial work, as well as the relations connecting such views, his institutional ties, and
appropriations by art criticism. This paper is grounded on the assumption that the reception of Brocos y
Gomez' work follows the movements of part of the Brazilian intellectual elite and the political tensions
established at the fall of the Empire and the rise of the Republic.
