Resumo
The present article discusses the importance of detail in the figuration of
the Spaniard painter rooted in nineteenth-century Brazil, Modesto Brocos y
Gomes (1852-1936). Inspired by the discussions of the art historian Georges Didi-
Huberman and based on the critical reception of the painting Engenho de
Mandioca (1982), considers opening images as a possibility of understanding
European thoughts about Brazilian Afro-American population in the transition to
the Republic.
