Resumo
Since 1995, the International Agency of Research on Cancer (IARC) recognizes the human papillomaviruses (HPV) 16 and 18 as
human carcinogens. Besides the involvement of HPV in cervix oncogenesis, it is accepted that this virus also participates of anal,
penile, vulvar, laryngeal and scrotal carcinogenesis. Papers reporting large number of cases of penile carcinoma are rare, and even
rarer are those reporting the association between penile carcinoma and HPV. This review aims to present data of HPV
characterization, oncogenesis, epidemiology and the most updated data regarding this virus and penile carcinoma. We searched
articles from PubMed, MedLine and Lilacs, using standardized Mesh terms for HPV and penile carcinoma, while establishing limits
within the last ten years of publication, written in either Portuguese or English and describing the disease only in humans.
