Resumo

This article presents a study that aimed to verify the effects of similarity between Spanish and Portuguese in speech production in L2, taking into consideration the hypothesis of attentional overload (COSTA, SANTESTEBAN & IVANOVA, 2006) caused by the similarity between the languages. To that end, data were analyzed from an L2 picture naming task completed by Portuguese-Spanish and Spanish-Portuguese bilinguals. Participants had to ignore distractor words, corresponding to names of the pictures in L1, which appeared before the image. The analysis took into account the reaction times (RT) and accuracy of the responses, to identify a correlation between these variables. The linguistic similarity in this context was observed by use of cognate, no cognates and false cognates words. Results showed no correlation between RT and accuracy, only between RT and cognate status, which may indicate that speed of lexical access and production in L2 is affected by cognate status. On the other hand, the lack of a correlation between RT and accuracy may be evidence that linguistic similarity does not guarantee quicker and more accurate production.
