Resumo

Multimetric indices used in biotic integrity assessment and biomonitoring demand are based on metrics extracted from biological assemblages. However, the lack of consistency on responses of the metrics in other regions where they were applied constrain the transferability from response models, demanding local standardizations. However, the factors underlying these differences in response are still poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated how environmental dissimilarity and spatial distance affect the transferability of the metrics based on fish assemblages to other regions. We use metrics that indicate landscape anthropization and test if the prediction to indicate degraded environments is affected by environmental dissimilarity and spatial distance. We also tested if functional and taxonomic metrics respond differently to these variables. We used 239 sampling sites in the Upper Paraná Ecoregion and characterized each site in terms of the degree of anthropogenic disturbance on a landscape scale (IPA). We sub-divided the ecoregion into 9 sub-basins, and we used two of them as a reference model for metrics responses to determine the metrics response to the IPA. Subsequently, we describe the divergences in the responses of the metrics outside the sub-basins to the responses obtained in the model sub-basins. Finally, we test if the errors are associated with environmental dissimilarity and spatial distance from sites to model sub-basins. The results show that the divergences in the responses of the metrics were associate with environmental dissimilarity and the spatial distance for the model sub-basin. Furthermore, functional and taxonomic metrics respond similarly to environmental dissimilarity and spatial distance. These results reinforce the necessity of standardization of metric local responses when developing multimetric indices, especially if protocols available were developed in farther and environmentally dissimilar regions.
