Executive functions are skills that involve complex cognitive processes and that help the individual to implement actions aimed at a goal (RODRIGUES, 2011; ANDERSON and REIDY, 2012; DIAMOND, 2006, 2013; COSTA et al., 2016; FINGER, BRENTANO and FONTES, 2018). Many studies, looking at the functioning of functions in school children and adults, have related the performance of functions with various aspects of life such as general school performance, compulsions, psychosocial behavior, among others (LEÓN 2015, CORREIA 2017, PEREIRA et al. 2012 and TREVISAN 2010). Research among preschoolers has focused on cognitive processes in early childhood education individuals, prioritizing children from the age of three (RODRIGUES and ORTIZ-PREUSS, 2019). The main justification for our study is the need to broaden the scope of research in the field of early childhood. For the development of our investigation, we had the participation of 11 children, between 24 and 27 months of age, who attend a public institution of early childhood education. This study aimed to identify and analyze associations between the language development of 2-year-olds and the development of their EFs. As specific objectives, we sought to analyze the receptive and productive language of the participants, considering the stages of language acquisition, observe the performance of the participants' EFs, considering the stages of development of the EFs, and infer possible relationships between the individual characteristics of the participants and their performance in EFs and language tasks. For this, we developed a semi-experimental research, of an applied nature, with a mixed approach, using quantitative and qualitative data. To assess language development, we used the Phonological Discrimination Test (SEABRA and CAPOVILLA, 2009), Infant Naming Test (SEABRA, TREVISAN and CAPOVILLA, 2013) and Bayley-III (BAYLEY, 2006). Components of executive functions, namely working memory, inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility, had their development evaluated through the adapted version of the Trail Test for preschoolers (TREVISAN and SEABRA, 2012) and the Caixa task (inspired by COSTA et al., 2006). The results showed that there were correlations between the linguistic and cognitive performance of children, specifically, associations were found between inhibitory control and working memory and the phonological discrimination ability (Dfono and TTPA tests) and between these components of executive functions and the ability to identify objects, figures and actions (Bayley III and TTPA tests). A correlation was also observed between the time in the early childhood education institution and the performance in the task of naming pictures. These results are important to broaden the understanding of the relationship between executive functions and language development and to signal the relevance of institutional early childhood education for the development of 2-year-olds.
