Resumo

The objective of the research that originated this study was to historicize, to reflect and to explain the presence, from the 1950s to the 1980s, in the former extreme north of Goiás at the epoch, today north of the State of Tocantins, of a group of Catholic missionaries known as orionites. They settled there and built churches, founded schools and hospitals. The presence of the orionites missionaries in the region here studied is so visible that they occupy a prominent place in the organization of the institutions of that society, from nursery school to university, the work of welcoming the hospital, the formation of lay religious movements to the main churches of the region . In this sense, we aim to understand the presence of these missionaries in that region in an attempt to identify the relationship between the work they have developed and what may have led, in our view, to the process of structuring Catholicism in the space studied here. So our journey to transform our research proposal into an effective problem led us to a central question: how did the orionites missionaries structure, in their way, Catholicism in the region of the old extreme north of Goiás in that context? Based on this problem, we sought to pursue this unease in the course of each chapter of this study. The sources that were analyzed for the construction of this narrative were exclusively written of memory of the orionites missionaries. For the deal with this type of source, we use studies on autobiography so that they support us in the interpretation of this type of record what is now called "self-writing". With regard to the methodological aspect we use, we analyze these sources in a way that seeks to unveil what it sometimes intended to omit, for which we also seek the subjective, the non-said of the discourses of those missionaries. The theoretical framework that underlies our analysis was the studies on Cultural History that approach the relationship between church and society. Beyond of concepts such as memory, representations and neocristality.
