dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of deforestation rates, for the 2003 2007 period, aiming at a better understanding of the current transformations of the Cerrado biome, as well as the generation of future scenarios. Prior to the rate estimations, a thorough physical characterization of the landscape and a comprehensive analysis of the occupation history of the biome were conducted. Concerning the rates, these were obtained for both the municipalities of the State of Goias, as well as for the entire biome, according to the Ottobacias criteria (level 3) for watershed divisions. In particular, the calculation of the rates took into account: a) land cover land use maps based on the visual interpretation of 2001 2002 Landsat TM imagery (produced, respectively, within the scope of the projects Identification of Priority Biodiversity Conservation Areas in the State of Goias PDIAP and Conservation and Sustainable Use of the Brazilian Biological Diversity PROBIO) and b) the annual deforestation dataset generated by the Cerrado Warning Deforestation System (SIAD Cerrado), for the period between October 2003 October 2007, based on the comparative analysis of MODIS vegetation index images. In both instances of analysis, the main goals were the identification of spatial and temporal patterns, as well as the determination of amplitudes, on an annual basis, for the overall deforestation rates. In relation to the Goiás municipalities, it can be observed that the deforestations, although distributed in very heterogeneous patches, tend to be correlated to the spatial distribution of the major agricultural crops, particularly when the whole period i.e. 2003 2007 is considered. Regarding the Ottobacias division, it is possible to identify, in spite of the large annual variation, certain spatial and temporal patterns of the deforestation rates, which also seem to be well correlated to the agricultural production. Nevertheless, our results suggest that deforestation rates prone to significant spatial and temporal fluctuations - should be used in a rather cautious manner, particularly when serving as an inertial temporal driver for the generation of trends and future scenarioseng

dc.description.resumoEsta pesquisa busca avaliar o uso de taxas de desmatamento, para o período de 2003 a 2007, com vistas ao entendimento dos processos de transformação em curso no bioma Cerrado, bem como a geração de cenários futuros. De início, caracteriza-se o espaço físico e a ocupação histórica do bioma. Quanto às taxas, estas foram obtidas tanto para os municípios do Estado de Goiás, quanto para o bioma como um todo, conforme as Ottobacias nível 3. Especificamente, o calculo destas taxas levou em conta: a) os mapas de cobertura e uso da terra, para Goiás e o bioma Cerrado, obtidos com base na interpretação de imagens Landsat TM do ano de 2001 e 2002 (e gerados, respectivamente, no âmbito dos projetos Identificação de Áreas Prioritárias para Conservação da Biodiversidade no Estado de Goiás PDIAP e Projeto de Conservação e Utilização Sustentável da Diversidade Biológica Brasileira PROBIO) e b) o conjunto de alertas de desmatamentos anuais gerados pelo Sistema Integrado de Alerta de Desmatamento (SIAD Cerrado) para o período compreendido entre outubro de 2003 e outubro de 2007, a partir da análise comparativa de imagens MODIS índices de vegetação. Em ambas instâncias de análise, buscou-se a identificação de padrões temporais e espaciais, bem como a determinação de amplitudes, para os diferentes períodos, das taxas. Em relação aos municípios do Estado de Goiás, observa-se que os desmatamentos, ainda que ocorram de forma bastante heterogênea, tendem a serem correlacionados à distribuição espacial das principais commodities agrícolas, principalmente em relação ao período total, i.e. 2003 2007. Em relação às Ottobacias nível 3, é possível identificar, apesar da grande variação anual, certos padrões espaciais e temporais para as taxas de desmatamentos, os quais também parecem estar correlacionados à produção agrícola. Ainda que as taxas, tanto a nível municipal, quanto no escopo de bacias hidrográficas, mostrem claras relações com a realidade da produção agropecuária, os nossos resultados sugerem cautela quanto ao uso de taxas para geração de tendências e cenários, os quais, em geral, são baseados em taxas únicas, independentemente das significativas variações temporais e espaciais existentespor
