Resumo

Information about species richness, integrating sampled data in local extensions and the dynamics of regional diversity, are essential for understanding the mechanisms that maintain diversity in biological communities, especially in aquatic environments, which have extensive connectivity. We use a phytoplankton community’s database applying the concept of beta diversity partitioned into two mechanisms, turnover and nestedness, and metacommunity, associated with data from environmental and spatial variables sampled at different periods in two subtropical cascading reservoirs, in Iguaçu River basin, Paraná, Brazil. We tested whether there is a predominance of turnover or nestedness in the beta diversity structure, and whether environmental heterogeneity, spatial and / or temporal variation better predict the taxonomic richness of this community. Our results indicated a temporal and spatial variation of the environmental conditions in the reservoirs. Species turnover was predominant in beta diversity structuring, while environmental heterogeneity and temporal variation had a major influence on phytoplankton. Thus, studies that consider the perspective of species selection and environmental variability are of interest, and should be considered both for the conservation of aquatic biodiversity and for the maintenance of ecosystem services.
