The present study aims to assess psychological factor about love relationships and pathological love and to compare men and women. It starts with a brief historical review of the formation of the concept of romantic love in the West, followed by a quantitative study that assesses pathological love and other psychological variables. In the latter case, a descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out through an online questionnaire. The instruments used assess psychological and sociodemographic variables relevant to love and pathological love, such as attachment, gender roles, self-esteem and beliefs about love. The final sample consisted of 702 respondents (N= 702) and was collected from June to September 2020, the period corresponding to the first wave of COVID-19 in Brazil. The results show that there is a statistically significant correlation and prediction between pathological love, anxious attachment and self-esteem. Regarding pathological love factors, the regression analysis showed that self-esteem is the variable that most predicts self-sacrifice in love relationships. That is, lower levels of self-esteem increase self-sacrifice. In comparison between groups, men showed lower self-esteem and greater self-sacrifice in love relationships compared to women. There were no differences in prevalence in pathological love between men and women.
