We use a phytoplankton community’s database applying the concept of beta diversity partitioned into two mechanisms, turnover and nestedness, and metacommunity, associated with data from environmental and spatial variables sampled at different periods in two subtropical cascading reservoirs, in Iguaçu River basin, Paraná, Brazil. We tested whether there is a predominance of turnover or nestedness in the beta diversity structure, and whether environmental heterogeneity, spatial and / or temporal variation better predict the taxonomic richness of this community. Our results indicated a temporal and spatial variation of the environmental conditions in the reservoirs. Species turnover was predominant in beta diversity structuring, while environmental heterogeneity and temporal variation had a major influence on phytoplankton.
