Its importance is mainly due to its wide array of hosts and its potential as a zoonoses. Furthermore, the infective form of the agent, Cryptosporidium spp., is highly resistant in the environment, enabling food, water and soil contamination and thus potentially causing large outbreaks and massive economical and social losses.
