Ensuring the survival of cultures and the preservation of their morphological, physiological and genetic characteristics are paramount in the adequacy of methods of preservation of human cells, animals and plants, bacteria, viruses, fungi and genetic material (DNA/RNA), but there is not a formula for that ideal or universal preservation. Thus, the choice of a maintenance method should be based on characteristics of the biological material under study, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each available technique. In this context, the ex situ preservation of collections of cultures has ensured the survival, stability and purity of lines for long periods, employing different methods of maintenance and cultures primarily available or scientific and technological communities of several countries.porAcesso AbertoColeções de culturasConservação ex situMétodos de preservaçãoCollections of culturesEx situ conservationMethods of preservationManutenção de microrganismos: conservação e viabilidadeMaintenance of microorganisms: storage and viabilityArtigo
