Our purpose is to analyze the aspects of his refl ections as one of the most infl uential members of the Castilian nobility of the late 13th and early 14th centuries, specially his thoughts on knowledge and power. One of our goals, in the investigated works (O Libro de los Esta-dos and El Libro Enfenido), D. Juan Manuel attempts to defi ne what would be the ideal ruler and the ideal nobleman. As an experienced man in the arts of war and politics, the author was also an intellectual. In that way, he stated that a diverse knowledge was a essential tool for leadership not only for future monarchs but also for rich men and other members of nobility to which he had written.porAcesso Abertohttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/D.
