The analysis uses, as theoretical references, the Cultural Materialism and the British Social History, taking as central concepts hegemony, by Williams (1979), and public memories, by Popular Memory Group (2004). To this theoretical basis, adds the contributions of Fonseca (2003) and Munakata (2007), to analyze textbooks as products of social relationships, giving focus on: 1) the textual and imagetic content; 2) the process of production of the textbook, showing the involved agents, and 3) the historic moment of the publication. It is inferred that the textbook reinforces many of hegemonic public memories about the place foundation, although proposes some exercises that urges the students to think critically. In general, the textbook helps to construct a traditional history, that reserves papers of protagonists just for few local habitants. The conclusion is that the textbook, although has some positive points, lost an odd opportunity of made a different kind of local history teaching, based on student’s trajectories instead of the hegemonic narratives about the past of the city.porAcesso Abertohttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Ensino de históriaHistória localCidadeMemórias públicasHistória e memóriaHistory teachingLocal historyCityHistory and memoryPublic memoriesConhecendo Toledo: um livro didático nas “memórias públicas” de uma urbe paranaenseKnowing Toledo: a teaching book in the “public memories” of a city of ParanáArtigo10.26514/inter.v11i31.4247
