The viruses belong to the Astroviridae family that has two genera although only members of the genus Mamastrovirus infect humans. These viruses have a plus-sense, single-stranded RNA genome with a polyadenylated 3’ end. The viruses are nonenveloped, with an icosahedral nucleocapsid, 28-40 nm in diameter, with a characteristic starlike architecture with five to six points. Eight types of human astroviruses (HAstVs) are currently recognized. Knowledge about epidemiology of the astrovirus infection and availability of fast and effective detection methods are important for prevention and control strategies.porAcesso AbertoAstrovírusDiagnóstico laboratorial de astrovírusEpidemiologia de astrovírusAstrovirus laboratorial diagnosisAstrovirus epidemiologyAstrovírusAstrovirusesArtigo
