It is possible to translate inside a single language or from one language to visual arts and music, for example. Translation is even more common and necessary because of multiculturalism and globalization, which diminish distance and connect countries. This article aims to expose some of the theoretical arguments that defend the importance of translation in the learning of foreign languages, claiming that translation exercises should be a part of the acquisition of foreign language process, just as reading and speaking are. According to this perspective, advocated by Sara Laviosa and other translation researchers, translation exercises complement the foreign language student’s education, offering them a bigger vocabulary and amplifying their reflections about both languages. Translation exercises, ignored for a while in different teaching methods, are now recognized as a communicative task, which deserves space in foreign language learning and teaching.porAcesso Abertohttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/TraduçãoHistória da traduçãoMétodos de aprendizado de L2TranslationHistory of translationForeign language teaching methodsA tradução na aprendizagem de línguas estrangeirasArtigoe- 2177-8868
