Both were built in the middle of the 12th century by the two first priores and followed the St. Augustine canonical rule. The first were the locus of care of sick monks prescribed by the augustinian rule and by all the liber ordinis. The second take care of the poors, the sick and old men and it also the pilgrims. The sick house and the charity hospital favoured the medical studies attested by the titles of the monastery armarium or library and the development of preventive procedures and practica medica.porAcesso AbertoMedicina monásticaMosteiro de Santa Cruz de CoimbraIdade médiaHospital São NicolauMonastic medicineSt. Nicholas HospitalMonastery of Santa Cruz of CoimbraMiddle agesA domus infirmorum do mosteiro de Santa Cruz de Coimbra e o acolhimento no hospital São Nicolau (Portugal, séculos XII-XIII)The domus infirmorum of the monasteryof Santa Cruz de Coimbra and the charity of the São Nicolau Hospital (Portugal, 12th-13th Centuries)Artigo10.1590/1980-436920150001000033
