This article was prepared to analyze the political speeches and social transformation present in two reports signed by José Evandro de Oliveira Brandão in O Semanário, on the local nationalist movement and, consequently, on the newspaper O Ibopatinga, which circulated in the municipalities of Paratinga and Ibotirama, Bahia interior, between the late 1950 and mid 1970. To put it in context, an explanation was made of the "historical record" about the rise of the press in modern Europe and its attempts to implement it in Brazil as an agent of social transformation capable of challenging monopolies of symbolic power.
