This essay analyzes Flann O’Brien’s second novel The Third Policeman, his
last to be published, on a surface level as parody of Homer’s The Odyssey, on a
profound level as a parody of James Joyce’s Ulysses, through which the author
disguises a kenosis rejection of the Joyce’s influence.
