Resumo
This study analyses and discusses the conception and social functions of the Universidade Estadual de
Goiás (UEG), based on legal and institutional documents of the period of 1999-2006, articulated with the
context of restructuring the higher education, State reform (in Brazil and in Goiás) and the globalization
process of the capital. The research becomes evident that the conception of university and its social
functions are not much clear for the UEG, even considering the expansion and the accentuated countryside
movement that occurred through the offer of the graduation courses. The institution leads, moreover, with
the ambiguity to live with the free and paid courses offer (sequential, graduation and specialization), due to
the resources necessity for its maintenance and development.
