Biometria de neonatos de tartaruga-da-Amazônia Podocnemis expansa (Schweigger, 1812) (Testudines, Podocnemididae) oriundos de ninhos naturais

Resumo

Biometric measurements were taken of 300 neonate giant Amazon river turtles from 30 natural nests located in the Environmental Protection Area (EPA) of Meandros do rio Araguaia, state of Goiás, Brazil. After hatching and complete absorption of the vitellus, the neonates were removed from their nests and kept on labeled plastic trays. The following measurements were recorded: carapace length (CL) and width (CW), and plastron length (PL) and width (PW), using a pachymeter with 0.10 mm precision. In addition to the measurements, the specimens were weighed on a balance with 1.00 g precision. The following mean values were recorded (in cm): CL (4.69 ± 0.21); CW (4.34 ± 0.24); PL (4.20 ± 0.18); PW (3.26 ± 0.15) and body mass (g) (26.80 ± 2.46). The data presented here are the first of their kind for the species in this region and may serve as reference for future studies.
