Resumo
The aim of this article is to discuss the central elements of the propositions that
seek to build the Sustainable Development as a model suited to address the
contradictions between environmental stress and the satisfaction of the needs
of present and future generations. The more general analytical argument is
centered on understanding that the Sustainable Development seeks to update
the promise – founder of modernity – that the human emancipation relative to
satisfying the “reign of necessity” would be achieved through economic and
social development, settledupon the progress of science and technology. Taking
as a reference the biblical mythology of the construction of the Tower of Babel,
the focus of the discussion was directed to the elements which constitute the
contradictions that gave way to the updating of that promise of happiness, as
well as the limits of the means presented as appropriate to its fulfillment. When
reflecting about the promise that moved the building of the mythical Tower of
Babel, which seems to also support the building of its contemporary version,
one can reflect on how we move inside the construction site that is still in
operation.
