Resumo
The starting point of this article is the recurrence of the notion of sertão in Brazilian cultural production since the advent of the Republic, identifying the many meanings attributed to that term in literature, plastic arts, music, movie, oral history and scientific thought. Simultaneously described as geographic space, time, form of social organization, cluster of cultural characteristics, symbolic locus of nationality, etc., sertão should be understood, for the author, as a category of collective thought. As such, it is situated in the unconscious and it is characterized by a surplus of crucial signification for the comprenhension ofthe process ofideological construction ofBrazil.
