The increasing number of Nursing Schools in Brazil has accounted for the generation of a growing number of
professionals with a degree in Nursing. This fact affects education and job offers and points to the relevance of monitoring
degree earners and their work conditions. The objective of this study was to identify the determining factors concerning employability
of nursing majors of a degree from a public university. Descriptive research was carried through semi-structured interviews with
41 earners of a degree in 2002 from the Nursing School at a public university of Goiânia, GO, Brazil. The data reveals that most
of the degree professionals work in the Family Health Program (PSF) and feel professionally prepared on account of the education
received. 19.5% feel unprepared to work on account of the gap between academic reality, requirements of the market, and lack
of continuing education programs. Conclusions show that the Nursing School enables its students to compete professionally,
although it must watch the demands and the trends of the job market from a short distance.
