Resumo

The use of hot-melt extrusion technology in the manufacturing of cyclodextrin inclusion complexes with essential oils has not yet been reported in the literature, despite its potential for the development of innovative medicines in industrial scale. In this sense, the aim of the present work is to discuss recent studies about drug complexation with cyclodextrins by hot melt extrusion, as well as the processing of labile and volatile materials using this technique, with a view of providing a proper basis for future works on the association of these approaches. Several studies have been compiled on (1) basic aspects about the hot melt extrusion process; (2) preparation and uses of drug-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes; (3) preparation of inclusion process by hot melt extrusion; and (4) processing of thermolabile and volatile materials by hot melt extrusion. The analysis of the literature data showed that, until now, there is only a small number of studies concerning the preparation of inclusion complexes by hot melt extrusion. Similarly, the processing of labile/ volatile materials using this technique has been poorly reported. Additionally, it was noted that the successful use of hot melt extrusion for preparing inclusion complexes and solid dispersions containing labile materials mostly depends on the proper choice of formulation and processing conditions. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that time, human and material resources should be applied to make feasible future investigations about the inclusion complexation of volatile compounds with cyclodextrins by hot melt extrusion in order to extending the applications of this advantageous technology in the pharmaceutical industry.
