Resumo

The parasitological contamination of vegetables may be a risk factor for health. The objective of this study was to verify the occurrence of parasites and the hygienic and sanitary condition of the lettuces commercialized in the municipality of Tangará da Serra, Mato Grosso, from December 2006 to April 2007. One hundred lettuce samples commercialized in the municipal free market were submitted to the sedimentation method. The positivity was 11% for parasitic species (Strongyloides spp., Toxocara sp., Fasciola hepatica, and Entamoeba coli) and 71% for free-living species. The predominant water used for irrigation was of artesian well (59.1%) and transportation was done in open vehicles (77.2%). Sanitary waste disposal pits occurred in 86.4% of the properties and the use of animal feces as fertilizer was reported by 100% of the producers. In conclusion the lettuce samples were considered inadequate for consumption
