Resumo

This paper examines the reality and prospects of the Brazilian Physics Olympiad in Goiás as a possible tool of scientific literacy in the manner of a non-formal education. Reflects on the history, relevance and general characteristics of that Olympics. Analyze science education as a cornerstone in the promotion of citizenship and the quest for sustainable economic, environmental, cultural, social, and to help break the stereotype of science as intangible. Presents an analysis, diagnostic tests, the evidence of the Brazilian Physics Olympiad, pointing suggestions of issues in context and better prepared. It is proposed to Brazilian Physics Olympiad as a contextual education partner and as we historically Brazilian Olympiad of Astronomy and Astronautics. The work highlights also the Brazilian Physics Olympiad as non-formal education, a characteristic that helps in the fulfillment of the education. Paper also an analysis of the vision of those involved in the Olympics, namely teachers, students and coordinators
