Resumo
The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of Cone Beam Computed
Tomography in decision making in surgical procedures for bone lesions of the
bucomaxillofacial region. It is an observational cross-sectional study which includes a
sample of Cone Beam CT scans and panoramic radiographs of patients with bone
lesion in the buccomaxillofacial region. All the records of patients attended from 2000
to 2016 in the Goiano Center of Mouth Diseases, the Center of Odontological
Radiology of the University Hospital of Brasília and in an private clinic were analyzed
and 32 medical records were selected. Panoramic radiographs and CBCT images
were evaluated by three examiners specialized in oral and maxillofacial surgery,
previously calibrated. The examiners evaluated the images of the patients by writing
down on the worksheet what the recommended surgical procedure for each case
would be. The obtained results were submitted to the McNemar test to evaluate the
frequencies of alterations in surgical management between the first and second
evaluation in PR and CBCT and the intra-examiner and inter-examiner concordance
were analyzed by the Cohen’s kappa test. The adopted level of significance was 5%
(p <0.05). The results showed that intra-examiner concordance improves when we
use CBCT, and inter-examiner concordance is low, independent of the exam, which
shows that the choice of treatment plan is examiner-dependent and not examdependent.
PR and CBCT did not present difference in changes of decision making
in surgical procedures for bone lesions of the bucomaxillofacial region. However,
CBCT increases the professional’s confidence in decision making in surgical
procedures that is influenced by each professional’s experience.
