Território e seleção de habitat de bandos de Monasa nigrifrons (Aves: Bucconidae) em Goiânia, Goiás

Abstract

There are still many gaps in knowledge about the basic biology of Neotropical birds, such as patterns of habitat use and selection, in a scenario of accelerated conversion of natural habitats into areas of human use and occupation. This study aimed to gather pioneering information on the Monasa nigrifrons species, focusing on describing the distribution of flock territories and habitat use, seeking to test the hypothesis that the species selects forest habitats and avoids open environments. A census and mapping of flock territories was carried out at the Samambaia campus of the Universidade Federal de Goiás, using minimum convex polygons (MPC) and kernel density. Using the locations obtained from the territory mapping and habitat classification, second-order habitat selection analyses were carried out. 39 individuals (34 inds./100 ha) and seven flocks were found, with territory sizes ranging from 1.02 to 13.39 ha, and averages of 1,93 ± 2,02 ha (MCP 95%), 3,14 ± 2,14 ha (MCP 100%) e 7,03 ± 3,12 (Kernel 95%). The selection analyses indicated that wooded and forest were positively selected while building and field were avoided. The results indicate small territory sizes and the species' association with arboreal environments in anthropized landscapes. The results reveal small territory sizes in Monasa nigrifrons flocks and their association with arboreal environments in anthropized landscapes. The study provides valuable information for formulating conservation strategies and identifying priority areas, highlighting the importance of preserving and restoring remaining forest habitats in urban areas.
