Resumo
The polysaccharide surface of
Leishmania species belonging to
mexican and brasiliensis groups and isolated stocks at Gaspar Viana's
laboratoy were studied by the direct
agglutination test, mediated by lectins.
Ten lectins' samples were prepared
derived from leguminous seeds from
thc following species: Lens cullinaris,
Ricinus communis, Artocarpus
integrifolia, Persea americana,
Arachis hipogaea, Mangifera indica,
Piswn sativum, Glycine max,
Tamarindo, Tritiwn vulgaris,
Canavalia ensiformis and
Phytohemaglutinin P.; having been
the last two lectins acquired in the
market. Different groups could be
observed related to the number and
variety of the lectin's saccharide bond
sites on the Leishmania surface,
having the strains of brasiliensis
complex shown a larger number of
connected sites for the lectins
comparing with the mexican complex
and others isolated from patients at
Gaspar Viana's laboratory.
(BARBOSA, W. et. ai. 1976, 1983,
1984). We confirmed through the
reaction of direct immunofluorescence
that the Lens culinaris and Canavalia
ensiformis marked by us with
fluorescent isothiocyanate (CLARK &
SHEPARD) showed similar rcsults to
the test of direct agglutination.
Parallelly we tested the capacity of
twelve lectins to agglutinate
Tripanosoma cruzi. We found bonds
that the surface of Trypasonoma cruzi
showed more connected bonds for the lectins, relating to the Leishmania
surface. Wc belive that the new lectins
plants tested are very promising in the
taxonomic study of Leishmania.
