Resumo

Aspects of Dipetalogaster maximus biology were studied in Trypanosoma cruzi (strain Y) infected and parasite-free insects in order to understand the interspecific relationship between host insect and the protozoan parasite. Sixty first instar nymphs, infected with T. cruzi ten days after hatch, and sixty parasite free first instar nymphs were reared at 28°± lºC and 70 ± 5% humidity. Medium period of nymphal development including 30 days of egg incubation was 201.1 and 204.8 days for uninfected and infected males and 202.5 and 204.2 days for uninfected and infected females. Medium time survival after starving was 79.2; 97.3; 146.5; 155.0; and 124.2 days for 2"d, 3'd, 41h and 5th instar nymphs and adults and 91.2; 117.6; 127.9; 136.4; 198.8 and 127.3 days for uninfected 1'1, 2"d, 3'd, 4t1', 5th and adults. The results show significant decrease on the survival of infected nymphs of 2º, 3º and 5º instars. This may indicate a typical T. cruzi parasitism relationship in the vector's intestine which may utilize vital nutrients to the host, tbus decreasing survival when in a state of absolute fast.
