Resumo
Rabies is an illness caused by a neurotropic virus of
the family Rhabdoviridae of the genus Lyssavirus. All
mammals, including man, are susceptible. Between 1976 and
2001 it was analyzed in Centro de Diagnósticos e Pesquisas
Veterinárias (CDPV) by the Fluorescent Antibody Test
(FAT) and Mouse Inoculation Test, 24.722 samples of central
nervous system of different animal species, coming from
Goiás State municipalities. Positive reactions for rabies were
detected in 22.1% (5.471) of the samples. There were
oscillations in the positivity rate until 1996 and after this, it
was observed a gradual decrease reaching 10.9% in 2001.
Cases of rabies in dogs and cats have been decreasing
drastically. It was registrated 25 dogs and 2 cats in 2001. In
bovines, equines and bats the number of cases have been
increasing, noting that from 2000 to 2001 there has been a
growth of 16.4% in the number of cases for bovines, reaching
67.5% of positive samples (249/369) in 2001. Control measures
like obligatory vaccination of cattle, horses, sheep and goats
and the control of the bats population were recently adopted
in Goiás State.
