Resumo
Based on Cultural Studies and Visual Cultural Education’s
perspectives, this article discusses the relations between
“folk culture” and “high culture” delineating a synthetic
overview of these concepts. Taking the notion of
authenticity as premise which defines manifestations
of high culture arrays, the article examines arguments
that oppose the idea of “mass culture” or, “low culture”
explaining how they belittle the notion “popular urban”
while privileging intellectualized self-expression in
accordance to references legitimated by critics and authors
specialized in restricted repertoires of art history.
