Resumo
This article results from a research developed on the concepts of
school failure present in the articles published on the Journal “Cadernos de
Pesquisa” form 1971 to 2006 (FARIA, 2008). During this period, the major-
ity of the studies were mainly concerned with the relation between school
failure and cultural issues. The most recent articles emphasize cultural di-
versity (propositive studies) whereas cultural marginality prevailed in the
former articles (critical and propositive studies). This article discusses the
cultural diversity approach and its contribution to the risk of preventing
social inequalities from being considered determinant to school failure.
