Resumo

We present a the survey of research on diatom taxa from the Brazilian Central-Western region, indicating priority areas for the study of these organisms. We registered 38 studies (16 dissertations/ theses, one report, 19 studies in periodicals and two book chapters) during the period from 1970 to 2009. Sixty-four genera and 503 specifi c and infraspecifi c taxa were reported. The most representative genus was Eunotia (81 taxa) and the most cited genus was Navicula (105 places). Ulnaria ulna was the most cited species (57 citations). Goiás was the richest Federal Unit with about 377 specifi c and infraspecifi c taxa, followed by the Federal District (219). Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul presented the lowest number of taxa (22 and 10, respectively); due to the scarce number of studies on diatoms in this region, this region should be regarded as a priority region on the biodiversity of these organisms.
