Resumo
This paper aims to analyze recent changes in the
agriculture in the Northeast of Brazil by identifying the
sources of change in the total productivity of factors.
Data concerning the 187 northeastern micro-regions and
ranging from 1996 to 2006 were used. The Malmquist
Index was also used to calculate changes in the total
productivity of factors which can be decomposed into
changes in the technical and technological efficiency. It
verifies that productivity increased in 52% of the microregions.
In regions where productivity decreased, it
explains that there was a considerable loss in productive
efficiency, once, in all of them there was a technological
progress. It classifies the technological changes as either
capital or labor saving. It notes that changes in labor
saving technology prevailed in 80% of the micro-regions
and that this new dynamic in agricultural production
in the Northeast had a significant impact on the use
of factors, reducing the labor elasticity of output and
increasing the capital’s elasticity.
