Resumo
Sincerity is closely related to modern subjectivity and to the autobiographical genre, started in philosophy by Rousseau. The assumptions of this concept will be briefly presented in order to search for the resurgence of sincerity in the context of the postmodern cultural theories of Lionel Trilling and
Charles Taylor. From Trilling’s Harvard lectures, between 1969 and 1970, published two years later as Sincerity and Authenticity, to Taylor’s conference entitled Ethics of Authenticity, published in
1995, there is considerable artistic expression in literature, music, visual arts and cinema concerned with sincerity and authenticity. The reframing of the modern concept of sincerity as authenticity
transforms the term “authentic” in the arts, giving it a moral sense. We propose in this article to investigate the unfolding of the concept of authenticity with moral and not only artistic value.
