Resumo

The aim of this paper is the development of a probabilistic optimization program for truss structures, by using a heuristic algorithm (Branch and Bound) and by using a technique to determine the failure probability of a structure (Monte Carlo). For structural volume minimization, the project variables are the areas and the inertia of the cross-sections. The constrains are the maximum tension in each bar, buckling in compressed bars and specific nodal displacements. Examples using deterministic optimization are used in order to evaluate their compatibility in terms of reliability. The obtained results show that the deterministic optimal solutions are not compatible with this requisite, while non-deterministic solutions have a higher material volume, in order to raise the system reliability.
